FRS Project

Fractional Reasoning Screeners

Pencil and paper math screeners that provide upper elementary teachers with a clear picture of how students reason about fractions, making it easier to identify strengths, misconceptions, and priority areas for instruction.

DESCRIPTION

The screeners are written assessments for students in grades 3–6. They help teachers understand how students reason about fractions, making it easier to target instruction.

Administration

These pencil and paper assessments are designed to be formative. They are best given in the weeks before fractions instruction begins or just before a fractions unit is completed.

Age range

The FRS assessments are intended for students in third through fifth grade. They may also be used to assess older students that may struggle with fractions concepts.

Completion time

The assessments are not timed. When administered to a whole class, they should take no more than 45-60 minutes, and many students will finish in less time.

FRACTIONAL REASONING SCREENING

Understand and Better Support Students’ Fractional Reasoning

Fractional reasoning at the end of the elementary years is key for success in middle and high school. The FRS help teachers gain clear insights into how students think about fractions, empowering them to target instruction and drive deeper learning.

MAKE STUDENT THINKING VISIBLE

The FRS provide valuable insight into how students think about fractions. Open-ended tasks give students the opportunity to share their understanding, offering teachers a clearer picture of their fractional reasoning.

ENgLISH AND SPANISH

The assessments are available in both English and Spanish, supporting first-language administration for Spanish-speaking students.

Teacher-Centric

The FRS places teachers at the center of understanding and supporting student learning. Through the assessment process, teachers gain valuable insight into their students’ thinking and understanding.
